Hey, y'all! Welcome to my poetry blog! Dog-Eared Poetry was created with the intention to talk about all things poetry, to make poetry accessible, and to follow my transparent journey on the road to publication.

Why "Dog-Eared" Poetry?

Some people believe that books are a sacred visual art and that the pages of a poetry collection should remain unmarred. I am not one of those people. I believe in interacting with words and immersing myself. I believe that reading can and should be an experience.

In my world, experiencing poetry and immersing oneself in a good book looks like writing in the margins, highlighting, underlining, folding the corners of a page (a.k.a. dog-earing), and drawing arrows, hearts, brackets, and asterisks.

Dog-Eared Poetry indicates poetry that's immersive and calls for interaction.

Poetry is for the People

As an English and creative writing professor in a past life, students would often convey a belief that poetry wasn't meant for them. They associated poetry with elitism and felt that their words weren't good enough. Luckily, by the end of the semester, those preconceived notions were corrected. They were, are, and will continue to be excellent poets!

I'm going to hold your hand as I say this: poetry is not for the snobs or the elitists. Poetry is not to be gatekept or made exclusive. Poetry is for the people!

I'll dive into poetry collections, provide reviews, offer book-inspired generative poetry challenges, and generally gush over poetic craft elements.
